After scrolling through Pinterest I was able to gather a collection of double spread page designs that inspire me. I found the following better suited for my magazine.

[A magazine double spread layout taken from Pinterest].

I really like this double spread layout as a lot of importance was given to both photographs and textual content. A bold font has been used for the title of the article so as to grab the readers attention. Photographs taken follow the same colour palette and style in terms of background, clothing etc. This layout is very organized and has a minimalist aesthetic, which will be easy on the eyes of the reader when they read the article.

After scrolling through Pinterest I was able to gather a collection of double spread page designs that inspire me. I found the following better suited for my magazine.

I found both the above double spread designs very unique and interesting. They have just featured one large photograph, yet they hold the attention of the audience. The placements of the pictures spread over two pages also adds to the aesthetic. Bold text has been used for titles and important quotes from the interviewee.

However I was not very enthusiastic about trying this design as I felt that it would be limiting in terms of incorporating photographs. However, I would do this layout as my opening page for the feature article if the double spread extends for more than 2 pages.

I was intrigued by this particular double spread design mainly because of the font and creative use of text wrap. The colour palette and font style used for the feature title easily appeals to the target audience. In addition, the photograph is superimposed over the text and the some part of the text has been wrapped around the image.

Although I was not taken up by the idea of superimposing the model over the text, as I feel like the parts of the article will be lost; I really liked the technique of text wrapping around the photograph. It would seem unique and appeal easily to the target audience.

Through this research activity I was able to able to get a comprehensive understanding of what factors I should pay attention to when planning out the feature page for my own magazine. I have not given importance to the articles in this part of the research as I wanted to get more of an idea on the designing part. However I intend to do a thorough research on photography, poses and article writing style.

After scrolling through Pinterest I was able to gather a collection of table of contents pages that inspire me. I found the overlapping collage style arrangement visually pleasing and better suited for my magazine. Attached below are some layouts that I found interesting.

In the above contents page I really like the the alignment and overlapping layout style they have used. I even like the fonts they have used as it enhanced the contents page more and made it very minimalistic. The images they had incorporated gives the readers an idea on what they will be seeing in each page and in turn appealing to them to continue to read the magazine. The typography and the photographs followed a calm colour palette throughout.

I liked this contents page in particular because of the minimalist aesthetic. Only a minimum amount of space has been taken to place the table of contents make the page very crisp and clean. The font used along with the less amount of photographs used adds to the style of the page. I especially liked the translucent boxes around the text and the bolded vertical lines used to highlight and make the text stand out.

This contents page design is very much different to the previous one where a lot of space has been used up by the images and text. However it is similar in term of the typography.

This was the contents page design that inspired me the most. The colour palette was very unique with different styles of pink and black: bold, translucent, colour fill etc. I really like how they've used a lot of photographs in the contents page itself to capture and hold the readers attention. The use of large numbers in various styles is visually very pleasing. I liked the idea of adding a small description below the title of each page as it gave the audience an overview of what to expect from each page. The technique of using grayscale images so that the text color doesn't clash seemed very unique to me.

Through this research assignment I was able to get an understanding of various magazine contents page layout ideas and was able to start pondering on my own design for the first draft.

I started off this part of my research by analysing the cover designs of 3 magazines of different genres: Vogue, Mac for seniors and InStyle magazines.

Vogue Magazine

[An image of a line-up of Vogue magazine covers taken from Pinterest.]

Vogue is an American monthly fashion and lifestyle magazine that is targeted at women between 20-40 years who are interested in the novelties of fashion and beauty.

When analysing the cover of the Vogue magazine, I saw that they had used a very simple and repetitive cover layout for 150 years. Vogue uses beautiful and relatively simple photography, typography and colour on all their covers. Vogue covers initially featured iconic fashion models like Kate Moss for instance in the past. However now they mainly feature actresses, singers and other celebrities (e.g: Harry Styles, Emma Watson).

Perhaps this transition is because celebrities are more easily recognized by the general public which in turn would increase the likelihood of purchase. Some of their cover photographs are close ups of the celebrities’ faces, medium shots of a group of celebrities and many of them occupy three-quarter of the cover.

The masthead is placed at the top of the magazine cover in a large font. They have very specific font faces and typography on their cover: the masthead font, a bold coloured sans-serif article title font and neutral, serif font that is used for sub-headings. Although these styles do vary from issue to issue, they are relatively consistent. The colour of the masthead and article titles is usually either drawn from a colour that appears in the main photograph, or it is a colour that contrasts the background.

Vogue uses a simple cover layout that reaches the audience by advertising the main articles that are inside, clearly displaying the magazine title and displaying the publication date.

The image even overlaps over the masthead (also known as superimposition), but it is still recognisable and noticeable from a distance. They mostly have editorial fashion photographs or high fashion photographs on their covers. At times even runway fashion photography is featured.

InStyle Magazine

InStyle is also another American fashion and lifestyle magazine which is also targeted at women between 25-39 years old.

When considering the language used in this specific issue of the magazine, both cover lines ‘Look your best’ and ‘Find your perfect coat’ give the readers the idea that the magazine is going to help them personally. This coverline helps to grab the reader's attention.

The masthead is placed at the top of the magazine cover in a large font. Its white font colour helps it stand out against the red background of the text. The image takes most of the space of the front cover, with the cover lines on the sides. The image even overlaps over the masthead (superimposition), but it is still recognisable and noticeable from a distance. Arial font is used and colours such as red, black, white and yellow are used, which suggests that this magazine is targeted towards an older audience rather than teenagers and kids.

Gwen Stefani is featured on the front cover of this magazine. She is a well known singer and a top fashion icon, which may attract and influence people to buy the magazine. This magazine targets new readers as well as usual readers. The cover image is in direct mode of address which helps simulate interaction with each individual reader. This image of Gwen Stefani is a medium shot and takes most of the space on the cover.

Mac For Seniors Magazine

Mac for seniors is a digital and technology magazine targeted at senior citizens who want to learn how to use personal computers.

The masthead ‘Mac for Seniors’ suggests the target audience of the magazine and the bolded large letters hold people’s attention. The strapline gives a very brief yet informative guide on what the magazine is about. The coverline, especially the bolded text and the bright red puff gives a simple overview of the key function of the Apple devices aimed at seniors.

The colour palette used for the cover design is very minimalistic and has a calm tone to it. Red colour blocks are used to highlight the important aspects like the functionality of the magazine etc. a light grey colour background has been used to accentuate the black colour font used.

An old couple in bliss is featured in the cover as a way to show that they are extremely satisfied with the product. The couple featured have an indirect mode of address. The photograph is also one of a medium closeup minimised in size to blend into the background. The Mac PC is highlighted by giving a colourful wallpaper, contrasting the minimalist design, captivating the reader’s attention.

Browsing through issuu.com and after reading quite a few magazines I came across selling lines and date lines in addition to the masthead, coverline and puff on the cover of some magazines.

[Elle magazine cover taken from Google Images. It was pre-annotated with the dateline and selling line marked on it.]

In completing the analysis I was able to determine the various components of a magazine cover and the importance of representation on the cover image used. It helped me to visualise the layout of my own magazine and put more thought into the photography, representation, typography and content etc. After researching and analysing these magazine genres and covers I decided to do a fashion magazine of my own for the foundation portfolio.

Inspiration

If I had to estimate, I would say I had watched every movie of High School Musical at least 8 times. I’ve watched the HSM YouTube edits more than a 100 times. I speak candidly when I say Sharpay Evans is my hero.

[Image of Sharpay Evan from Internet.]

My earliest memories of watching HSM are from when I was just 8 years old. Upon arriving home from preschool I would run into the living room and beg my grandma to let me watch HSM instead of her melodramatic Bollywood movies. Of course, she would always cave in.

I would prance around the room and screech the lyrics of the infectious ‘Humuhumunukunukuapua'a’ song at the top of my lungs with the shimmering Christmas streamer wrapped around myself. Was it pink you may wonder? To my younger self’s disappointment it was not.

What fascinated me the most were her outfits. Sharpay served iconic looks for 3 years straight and she did with class. What with her dressing gowns adorned with glitter, faux collar and cuff to her personalised graduation cap and her Brown cord and white fur; she had me thinking that high school life was Paris Fashion Week.

While my 8 year old self admired her level of obsession with pink. My 18 year old self admires what she represents.

Growing up in Sharpay’s world of chaotic fashion, planted a seed in my brain at a crucial development stage, which in turn inclined me towards fashion and makeup. For every school play I had to wear eccentric makeup which made me stand out. I had to wear clothes that no one else wanted to. Fashion needs confidence to be who you are; to embrace yourself. And that’s exactly what inspired me to do a fashion magazine.

Codes and Conventions

However I couldn't let Sharpay Evans take the front seat and forget about the codes and conventions of a fashion magazine. Hence I did a short research before finalising the genre for my production.

[Presentation on genre research as a video.]

Learning outcome:

This activity helped understand the elements I would have to focus on and the amount of work required for each of the segments such as the shoot, editing, designing processes.

So in the words of Miss Evans herself:

“Does this look like a good outfit for changing history?”
