Behind The Scenes - A Portfolio

For the foundation portfolio of AS Level, I have chosen to do the magazine task. This is an individual project that I have worked on. This segment of the blog evidences my work for component 01.

I did all my first designs on a very basic online software called ‘Canva’ and although it was useful for designing my first drafts it had limitations when it came to advanced designing in terms of layouts and typography.

However my Media Studies teacher then introduced me to 3 different softwares that would be of use to me when I map and produce my second drafts and the final product: Adobe Photoshop CS6, Adobe Illustrator CS6 and Adobe InDesign CS6.

I was not at all familiar with these softwares and I wanted to familiarise myself with them before I started with the actual designing process. I started off by practicing on Photoshop with the help of some tutorials. Then I was able to move on to InDesign where I was able to use some templates to help designing the magazine more professionally.

Attached below are time-lapses, screenshots and documents of the basic layouts and designs I made to get a better handle on the software.

I noticed when designing the above design I need more practice in terms of layout and typography. Knowing that, I put more focus into developing those areas in particular.

I liked this layout a lot and was happy with how the colour palette was enhancing the double spread. However this palette is not appropriate for my magazine concept.

I designed the double spread pages above as a layout practice for my final production, using images taken off the Internet. Although I was able to get a better handle on typography in these designs with the help of YouTube tutorials, I was still not satisfied. Hence I decided to do more practice and learn the ropes of InDesign as much as possible before my mock shoot, after which I would be designing my second draft.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 is a fairly new software to me as I have never used such advanced software before for any editing works. Thus I did some practice work and experimented with the software to understand the functioning of its tools properly.

These are a compilation of some of my editing works which I did regularly every weekend.

Learning outcome:
I realised that Photoshop has a lot of advanced features that I could make use of to create a good final product. However I also understood that I was fairly new to the software which means I will have to continue practicing and playing around with Photoshop to be able to create a creative and well put together final product. I could see my works improve over time as well.

Note: I have organised the designs based on the tool I used. The time lines I did them are different to the above order.

Initially I used The Paint software on my laptop to draw up a storyboard of a few pages of my magazine so I can get an idea of the content I will be including in this issue of the magazine. These are very simple digital drawings that I used as a brain dump to help myself get an overview of the contents I was going to put so that it was space-aware and put out in an organised manner. However I did not do the storyboarding for all of the pages in my magazine - just the prominent ones. I also made my notes on the storyboard itself to help with the first draft design. Attached below is my magazine storyboard.

I started designing the first draft of my magazine contents page by following the layout of Elle magazine which I found really nice when I was doing my research on content page designs. I used the free software Canva to design the first draft. The photographs used are taken off of Pinterest and Instagram as I also wanted to take photographs in similar poses as it was in those images. As I was using a free version of the software there were a lot of limitations when it came to fonts and editing options. Attached below is the first contents page draft of my magazine.

I was advised by my teacher to pay more attention when I was choosing the font colour so that it doesn’t camouflage with the photographs on the pages. She also suggested that I choose a specific colour palette for this issue and stick to it and make the pages more put together.

I started the designing process for my magazine cover by drawing a very basic mock focusing on the placements of each component of the magazine. Attached below is my digital sketch of the cover layout. As you can see I didn’t attach any sort of visuals on the document as I wanted it to be more of a template for the product rather than a draft for the final product. This sketch helped me to understand more about the spacings and placements of each component. I also used this template as my brain dump document by annotating on it before I started drawing up the first drafts.

After drawing up the sketch I moved on to designing my first draft for the magazine cover. I used Canva to design my first draft. I downloaded some images from Pinterest that fit the aesthetic of my magazine and had celebrity models in poses that I had thought of featuring on the cover and used them when I edited the first draft. As I was using a free version of the software there were a lot of limitations when it came to fonts and editing options. Attached below is the first magazine cover draft I designed on Canva.

This magazine cover has a very minimalist, dark blue, pink, purple aesthetic to it, in order to represent the Night Court. The masthead says ‘Scigra’ in cursive shaded silver writing, to go with the colour palette. The scrap line includes ‘fashion, beauty and books’ to give a very straightforward view of the contents of the magazine. I haven’t yet pondered on what the exact cover line should be but I have laid them out. The picture I’ve used is taken from Pinterest as it was very much similar to the cover pose I had thought of: A medium shot of a male and female dressed in the outfits put together making indirect mode of conversation.

Although I was able to design the draft I had missed out on some components that are essential in the magazine. And my teacher gave me suggestions on the strapline - to change the strapline so that it widens more prospects for the future issues of the magazine. She also advised me to move the ‘Sri Lanka’ to the upper part of the cover near the masthead. She also wanted me to include a dateline and issue to complete the masthead, barcode etc. She also wanted me to work on the coverlines to include something that is unique about the beauty industry in Sri Lanka like Spa Ceylon for instance. I was also asked to redesign the layout for the quote - by adding a thumbnail or a visual of the book jacket on the cover itself.
